Luxembourg Travel Guide - This city and country - The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg - offers a variety of things to do and see. The country is only just over 50 miles long and just over 30 miles across. Less than half a million people live there and the result is a unique country with its own unique character.

Its history dates back to 950 AD when an important castle was built on the site of the city and from the castle grew a town and a fortress. Luxembourg has been an independent state for a long time and in the first half of the 19th Century the surrounding countries combined to agree to keep it so stemming from the agreement at the Treaty of Vienna. The present Grand Duke Henri has executive powers and rules with 12 cabinet ministers. Luxembourg was one of the founding members of the European Union.

As you can imagine with such a historic city there is plenty of sightseeing to do so be sure to take a camera along while you are out and about. With lots to keep you busy you'll see why so many people love to visit Luxembourg to enjoy the wonderful fortified walls (an UNESCO heritage centre, the magnificent Cathedral, etc. A stroll around the Old City is a treat, and you will have to take the “Vauban Walk” - to feel you are going back in history as you enjoy the castle turrets, defensive walls and winding laneways paved with cobblestones.

Keep in mind there is theatre, meseums, (make sure to visit the City History Museum) as well as many other wonderful attractions to keep you more than interested. If you love the nightlife, then you'll find that Luxembourg's is thriving.

For dining you can choose from so many restaurants of all different cuisines - remember Luxembourg is bordered by Belgium, France and Germany and they have all left their gastornomic influences. Your pallete will be pleased to say the least. Be sure to try as many of them as you can during your visit to the city.

Hotels are many and you can pick from all different price ranges. It's a good idea to look up the hotels over the internet and get a good idea of what you can expect when you arrive.
